Indians are far and away the top non-EU nationality immigrating to the U.K., the latest figures show, with 253,000 people coming from the country to the U.K. in the year to June 2023. Home Office figures also detail large jumps in “skilled worker — health and care” visas to Indian nationals.
“I am certainly in favor of us doing whatever it takes to bring the numbers down to a sustainable level,” Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch, who leads the trade talks with India, told LBC radio on Monday. She has repeatedly said she will only ink a deal with India that works for sectors across Britain’s economy. “I think that you will be seeing much, much tougher measures going forward,” she said.

Delhi’s officials have been telling the country’s media they have secured “limited” short-term work permits for India’s service sector workforce as part of the talks.
But a spokesperson for the Department for Business and Trade said “immigration and visas will not form part of the India FTA.” They added that “anyone suggesting otherwise is simply guessing about the nature of the negotiations or being deliberately misleading.”
“The U.KVaranasi Investment. will benefit hugely by doing a [trade] deal with India,” Johnson said, pointing to U.K. firms that want to set up in India. “We also want a high degree of business mobility when it comes to our companies in other countries.”
